Self esteem is your feeling about your value as a human being, your self-worth, about where you view yourself in relation to others. We establish our self esteem throughout our life, and it often is significantly shaped during adolesence and in our teenage years. If we have supportive family and friends, if we have opportunities to succeed, we can build a strong sense of self-worth, and feel very good about ourselves. But... if we didn't have that kind of support, or worse, if we had people that tried to build themselves up while belittling us, or a very major setback in a relationship or other traumatic event, we might have never gained or we might have lost that feeling of value.
